Avery Brewing Company Announces No. 3 in our Barrel-Aged Series

BLACK TOT DAY is Friday, January 15th from 5PM to 8PM at the Avery Tap Room in Boulder

Boulder, CO – Avery Brewing Company is preparing for the release of Black Tot, a barrel-aged imperial oatmeal stout that is the third installment in their Barrel-Aged Series. Like all other releases in the Barrel-Aged Series, Black Tot is of limited availability, and will be released at the brewery in Boulder on Black Tot Day, which is set for January 15th, 2010.

Black Tot, No. 3 in the Barrel-Aged Series, is an Imperial Oatmeal Stout aged in Gosling’s Old Rum Barrels. It features huge, chewy and endlessly deep flavors of roasted dark malts, sweet rum, espresso and more subtle elements of brown sugar, molasses and vanilla. Initial sips are bold and intense, but new flavors burst and slide into the milieu as the beer warms, drawing you deeper into the stormy heart of this most dark and tumultuous brew. Black Tot demands to be poured into your favorite glass to be pondered and appreciated. We think you’ll want more than just one tot!

Black Tot Day: Then and Now
On July 31st, 1970 the Royal British Navy laid rest to their centuries-old tradition of serving a daily ration of rum–or “tot”–to all sailors, and the last tot was drawn in the fleet around the globe. While sailors continue to rue and curse that final day, commonly referred to as Black Tot Day, we decided to reincarnate Black Tot Day as a celebration of the great good that comes from aging beer in oak! Attendees of this free event will have the opportunity to purchase up to six bottles of Black Tot and taste four versions of the original Imperial Oatmeal Stout: Black Tot (aged in rum barrels), along with unoaked, Rye barrel and Bourbon barrel versions. Each will be on tap for $3 per taster.

After the release in Boulder on 1/15, Black Tot will be available in 12oz. single bottles in select markets across the country. Suggested retail is $8.00 per 12oz. bottle.
