Over Town Brewing, a new brewery and taproom located a few streets away from Old Town Monrovia, will officially open its doors March 15th with a 2-day grand opening party. Owners Ryan McKay and Carlos Plazola who met in college in a graphic design program at Woodbury University and have been friends ever since, spent several years homebrewing and understanding the process and necessary equipment before deciding to take the leap into making this a full-time career. Their attention to detail doesn’t go unnoticed, as you enter the building, you first see furnished picnic benches nestled next to the windows and a shiny bartop allowing customers to get a close view of the brewhouse where it all happens. Mckay and Plazola, both creatives with a design background, have their work cut out for them as you notice right when you enter the room, the decor and openness is welcoming you right into their home.
“I have a varied background in design, merchandising, branding, marketing and web design,” says McKay. “I’m also a pretty skilled carpenter/woodcrafter, and have several specific mechanical skills plus a good head for customer service. I adapt well to most situations and challenges. I just tried to apply all that to our venue and brewery setup.”
Plazola adds, “From the start, we wanted customers to feel at home and as if it were their brewery too.”
If you’re curious where the name Over Town originated from, McKay is originally from Catalina and they would call the “mainland” or “Los Angeles” the “over town.” “It was also, in our minds, the only place to get good beer since our small store only stocked the basics,” McKay says. Which make sense why they chose the location of the brewery near Route 66 and in an area embracing the craft beer culture.
Over Town’s taplist reflects a variety of options like the Passion of the Grist, Bundy Blonde, Eagle Rock Amber and Coffee Pot Stout. For their grand opening, guests can expect a different beer selection each day of the 2-day event as well as local food vendors including the Billionaire Burger Boyz, BrewWings and Los Tamaleros.
The family-friendly brewery also offers a variety of non-alcoholic drinks, packaged snacks, games such as Ring Toss and Darts, and will later show movies from a projector as well. Food delivery is also available.
Over Town is located at 227 W. Maple Ave., Monrovia, CA 91096. Hours are Tuesday – Thursday, from 4-10pm, Friday from noon-11pm, Saturday from noon-11pm. Closed Monday and Sunday.
