(Long Beach, CA) – The inaugural Festival Obscura presents “A Celebration at Sunnyside Cemetery” will take place Saturday, June 30th, 2018 at Long Beach’s iconic Sunnyside Cemetery. Festival Obscura has teamed up with Sunnyside Cemetery to bring awareness to the 112 year-old historic site and its 16,300 Long Beach souls who helped shape the city we know and love. The event will feature over 20+ local macabre artists and musicians, local historians, authors, and morticians along with 45+ independent local craft breweries, cideries, cult wineries and diverse food trucks, all gathering to raise funds for Sunnyside Cemetery, one of Long Beach’s most historic, yet neglected sites.
As the first craft libation and art/music fundraising festival in a California cemetery, admission to this exclusive event will be limited to 1,600 guests. All guests receive a complimentary customized Sunnyside Cemetery souvenir-tasting glass with unlimited taster pours. $45 General Admission provides access from 1pm to 5pm; $65 VIP Admission offers one hour earlier access and a limited edition commemorative tote bag, perfect for shopping the unique vendors. $25 Bird Designated Driver tickets are also available. Guests are invited to sample the festival’s offerings and entertainment while soaking up the rich, unique Long Beach history the cemetery represents. Proceeds support a brighter future for Sunnyside Cemetery, Inc. (501(c)13, non-profit).
About Festival Obscura: Based out of Long Beach, Festival Obscura is a passion project founded by Martin Svab (co-owner/founder of Phantom Carriage Brewery) and partner Ryan Hughes (Director of Sales, Phantom Carriage Brewery). Svab and Hughes, both proud Long Beach residents, appreciate the rich culture and history of this vibrant, coastal city. Their love for local history and the macabre, combined with their philanthropic nature and vast experience in craft beer and event production, led them to their partnership with Sunnyside Cemetery. Visit: www.festivalobscura.com.
About Sunnyside Cemetery: Founded in 1906 and with no space left to sell, the cemetery relies on interest from an endowment fund to maintain operations. In 1994, a former owner embezzled more than half of that $1M endowment, a financial loss yet to be overcome. Limited funding combined with years of drought have accelerated the deterioration of the cemetery grounds. The current non-profit organization, aptly named Friends of Sunnyside, consists of family members of loved ones at rest at the cemetery and dedicated community volunteers who struggle with the lack of resources. Find Sunnyside Cemetery and Friends of Sunnyside Cemetery Long Beach on Facebook.
More Festival Info: “A Celebration at Sunnyside Cemetery” will celebrate Long Beach’s unique character and history, bringing together local artists, authors and special guests including Dark Art Emporium, Dark Parks Antiquities, Memento Mori, and 45 Revolutions. Local musicians will entertain guests as they wander the historic cemetery, sample local beers, wines and ciders while they explore the festival. Sought-after food trucks promise to satisfy diverse diets as well as small local food and non-alcoholic vendors, such as Long Beach Jerky and Hop Water. The Historical Society of Long Beach will offer insights into Sunnyside Cemetery and local history. A silent auction will also take place helping raise additional funds.
