As I brag in almost every beer I review, California is known for their larger than life, often times super hoppy reputation. I was talking to a well versed beer specialist from Pennsylvania, and he asked me to have him try California beers that weren’t huge and hoppy, or from The Lost Abby and Stone. He wants to try something that would suprise people to know it comes from California. I thought to myself, “Damn!” I am so used to drinking the hopped up stuff from the lower region of California, that I couldn’t quickly rattle off some East Coastish, subtle yet excellent beers. Here is my attempt at it.

Newport, Or., - The 2nd Annual Brewer’s Memorial Ale Fest was held on May 16-17th in Newport, OR and benefited Oregon Humane Societies. 3,200 people with 471 of their best friends attended the festival created in memory of Brewer, the faithful companion of Rogue Brewmaster John Maier, who passed away on May 20th, 2006. Brewer grew up in the brewery and eventually rose to the rank of CEO of Rogue Ales.
The dog-friendly brew festival was held inside the Rogue Ales Brewery and included Doggy Musical Chairs, Dog Wash (pictured below), Dog Dancing, and Celebrity dog look-a-likes (Rin-Tin-Tin, Lassie, Benjy, and of course, Brewer).

This brew can be found almost anywhere in California, where finer brews are sold. Just recently, Bear Republic also started offering some of their beers in 12 oz bottles. I am accustomed to finding it in it’s 22 oz bottle, and that is how I acquired this one. If you like malty, hoppy, spicy goodnes, pick this up, as it is less expensive than most 22oz bombers these days.
Appearance: Dark Red, tan head, very cloudy. Only at the bottom of a pint glass, will any light get through. The head is about 1/2″ thick and leaves webbing after taking a few sips.
