Review – New Glarus Yokel

Submitted by Dan on August 19, 2009 – 8:33 am No Comment

New Glarus YokelFrom New Glarus Brewing Co.Yokel is inspired by the German traditions of small village breweries – simple and pure beer. A whole beer straight from the tanks, it is smooth, unfiltered, and without pretense. Wisconsin, German, and English barleys and the finest Bavarian hops combine in classic German brewing methods to create this Golden Lager.Additionally, Yokel is naturally cloudy and rich in vitamins from the yeast. Expect this beer to be smooth, as well as rich and malty. It is the perfect companion for a hot summer day. Remember, ‘Buy Local, Drink Yokel’.

New Glarus Brewing Co. – Yokel – 12 oz. bottle poured into a pint glass. Between 4-5.5% abv.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy dull yellow gold with almost no head.

Aroma: Faint whifs of breadiness.

Taste: To sum it up, a less hoppy pilsener and a less bready Kolsch-style beer.  A nice touch of lemon and bread crust, finishes with very light bitter hops.

Mouthfeel: Fizzy and crisp.

Overall: Quality crafted lager. This beer has character, and could have easily had predictable flavors for a pale colored lager. As mentioned in the taste notes, this beer takes  very smooth approach, not being overly biscuity or bitter, and not compromising in flavor.
