Odell Woodcut No. 3 – The Review

Submitted by Dan on December 7, 2009 – 10:26 am No Comment

woodcut3From Odell BrewingFor Woodcut No. 3, brewers artfully combined Crystal, Cara, and Munich malts to create a pleasant sweetness and an appealing red color. Hints of caramel, raisin, and toasted almonds are balanced by delicate hop flavors, and the beer’s distinct oak aroma enhances the finish. Woodcut No. 3 is a perfect pairing for the traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

Odell Brewing – Woodcut No. 3 Oak Aged Crimson Ale – 750 ml bottle poured into a goblet . 11% abv.

Appearance: Dark maroon with a large, fluffy beige head.

Aroma: Charred oak barrel and soot up front. Aromas that reminded me of old books as well. After you get passed the humongous wood presence, you can smell herbal hops and spicy malt.

Taste: Dark astringent booze, lots of oak, toasted dry malt, dark sugar and spicy bitter hops.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied and hot.

Overall: This is what I would consider a “wood bomb.” Holy crap! It was drinkable and fun, but I am not stretching the truth by saying this tasted like beer that has been soaking in wood, char and soot.
