Deschutes The Abyss 2009 Reserve

Submitted by Dan on January 4, 2010 – 12:13 pm No Comment

From Deschutes Brewing Co. – November 3rd, 2009 marked the fourth release of this dark and mysterious imperial stout. Limited availability in wax-dipped 22-ounce bottles and on draft at a few select establishments in all of the states we distribute in except Texas.

Deschutes Brewing – The Abyss 2009 Reserve – 22 oz. bottle poured into a goblet. 11% abv. From a liquor store  my neighbor went to in West Covina, the name escapes me.

Appearance: Pours a midnight brown with a fluffy cap of tan foam.

Aroma: Big roasty malt, chocolate, spicy hops, anise, maple syrup, molasses, and vanilla.

Taste: Burnt and roasted malts, molasses, vanilla, bourbon, oak and spicy hops.

Mouthfeel: Syrupy.

Overall: I enjoyed this much better than the last bottle I had, that was 1 year old. This is definitely on the sweet side for an Imperial Stout.
